Ecovyst Q&A

  1. What year did your company begin manufacturing materials for enzyme
    immobilization?

    2023
  2. Can you give some historical background about your company – how/why did
it become a producer of enzyme immobilization materials?

Ecovyst began producing anti-block silica in 1964 and metal catalysts in 1976. Since
then, we have grown into a world-class manufacturer of advanced materials serving
multiple industries. Today, our focus is on sustainable markets (sustainable catalysis,
Carbon capture, advanced adsorbents, Biocatalysis) supporting our customers in
developing and scaling up catalysts and adsorbents.
Our first enzyme-related project arose a few years ago, driven by a customer’s very
specific requirements for pore size, volume, and surface area. While silica has long
been recognized as an effective support for enzyme immobilization, Ecovyst’s unique
expertise in fine-tuning silica properties makes our advanced materials an ideal fit for
    such applications.
  3. What industries do you supply?
Non exhaustive list: Chemicals, Oleochemicals, Petrochemicals, Pharma but also
    mining and food.
  4. What is the maximum batch size your company can produce?
A single batch of functionalized silica is approximately 2 metric tons. We operate g
multiple units in parallel, we can produce significantly larger quantities.
  5. What is your standard lead time?
Standard lead time is 6 to 8 weeks, from date of PO.
  6. What makes your materials special?
We have unmatched control over silica properties at that scale of production. Our
expertise allows us to tailor and co-develop silica supports so that the final product is
fully optimized and customized to our customers’ needs. Our silicas and functionalized
silicas are also widely used in traditional metal catalyst production, and we specialize in
scaling up—from 1 kg in the lab to pilot, to multiple tons across our various production
    sites.
  7. Anything else you want people to know?
Ecovyst has invested in establishing a fully equipped biocatalyst laboratory, along with
dedicated production equipment. Our core strength lies in designing bespoke silica
particles, and we are advancing capabilities for enzyme immobilization using industrialscale
    equipment.
