Thanks to our suppliers we are up to forty five carriers in the Solidzymes library. These are commercially produced materials from brands like Doulite, Amberlite, Seplife, Indion, DIAION, Relizyme, and others. Most were provided wet, so in order to weigh out comparable amounts we need to know how much liquid is in the samples. We took a small sample from each product and weighed it before and after drying in an oven. They varied from 21% up to 94% dry solids. Adding the dry solids content to our database will allow us to adjust the amounts used for future experiments based on the dry solids – after all, the solids are what we are pay for not the water!
Getting all the samples out and listed in a spreadsheet also revealed some missing carriers. So, now we are off to track down and procure some additional candidates to round out our collection. Also, some of these may need to be rinsed in various solutions, for example, to add metals to the carriers that use metal affinity interactions. Each time a new product is received or stored in different liquid(s) we will measure its dry solids content again.
